CONTEMPORARY ARTIST FROM UKRAINE

ABOUT VALERY YEMTSEV

PERSONAL BACKGROUND AND CREATIVE APPROACH

Valery Yemtsev, born in the south of Ukraine near the Sea of Azov, now resides in Krakow, Poland. The warm, sunny climate of his homeland often lingers in his memories, influencing his artistic vision. From a young age, Yemtsev was drawn to creative activities, spending hours molding fantastic animal figures from plasticine. By age eleven, vivid, colorful dreams of flying through picturesque landscapes sparked his fascination with the contrast between dreams and reality.

Yemtsev’s journey into the world of painting began under the guidance of his first art teacher, who recognized his talent when he painted a bird in watercolor. This encouragement ignited his passion for academic painting and drawing. His formal education at the Textile Institute’s Department of Fashion Modeling introduced him to modern art concepts and a scientific approach to art, under the tutelage of avant-garde artists from the Soviet era. This period, which he calls “Art as Science,” laid the foundation for his exploration of art as a structured and spatially organized form.

In the early 1990s, Yemtsev’s scientific perspective on art merged with his experiences in Tibetan Buddhism, following a lecture by Buddhist lama Ole Nydahl. This philosophical blend shaped his understanding of clarity and wisdom in the creative process. Yemtsev’s art became a manifestation of living beyond limitations, embodying a sacred space where creative energy thrives.

WORKS

THE VIBRANT WORK OF VALERY YEMTSEV

Valery Yemtsev’s creative process is described as a “positive mind game,” where the interplay of ideas and artistic techniques serves humanity. His works are deeply inspired by Eastern philosophy, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of all things. Yemtsev believes in choosing the right path and using modern technologies to enhance his creative projects, akin to driving a fast car on the highway of artistic expression.

Yemtsev’s approach to art combines the traditional and the contemporary. He draws parallels between sacred paintings like icons and Tibetan Thangkas, which are harmonious and eternal, devoid of ego and signatures, serving as gifts to humanity. For Yemtsev, art is an act of balance and harmony, essential for physical and mental health. His paintings, therefore, are not just visual delights but meditative practices that harmonize his life and enhance his creative potential.

The themes in Yemtsev’s work are not predefined but evolve through a search for solutions, encompassing ideas, technology, and even the unique signature on each painting. When creating, he aims to maintain a state of harmony, feeding the space with love and compassion. The reaction of the viewer, according to Yemtsev, is the ultimate judge of his work, and if the essential qualities of his art are absent, he views it as an unfinished endeavor.

ARTIST STATEMENT

INNOVATION AND INSPIRATION IN KRAKOW

I perceive my art-making process as a positive mind game, where everything created serves humanity and brings joy. My journey into art is deeply influenced by Eastern philosophy, which teaches that all things are interconnected. This philosophy, affirmed by modern science, guides my creative path, merging ancient wisdom with contemporary techniques.

My art is a blend of structured academic painting and the harmonious, egoless essence of sacred art forms like icons and Tibetan Thangkas. I see my work as a means to achieve balance and harmony, vital for both physical and mental well-being. Painting is my meditation, a practice that harmonizes my life and enhances my creative potential.

Every artwork I create is an exploration, a solution to an artistic challenge. I aim to create sacred spaces with my creative energy, free from attachment to likes or dislikes. Viewer reactions are crucial to my work’s validation; if they resonate with my art, it signifies a successful creation. If not, I view it as an opportunity for further growth and refinement.
