ABOUT LIISA VIIMA

PERSONAL BACKGROUND AND CREATIVE APPROACH

Born in Oulu, Northern Finland in 1961, Liisa Viima’s creative journey began in childhood, with an early passion for painting that was set aside for nearly five decades. Though her young dreams of becoming a professional painter were once abandoned, a profound inner calling reignited her artistic spirit in 2020. Today, she lives and works in Espoo, Southern Finland, where her rediscovered purpose as an artist has become a driving force in her life. Her work, deeply spiritual and emotionally resonant, is rooted in personal transformation and healing.

Viima’s creative process is intuitive and spiritually driven. Ideas emerge continuously in her mind, urging her toward the canvas. She begins each piece by laying down a foundation of acrylic paint, breaking the blank surface before moving into rich, layered applications of oil. Her technical method includes multiple layers—often two to five—that incorporate gypsum, stencils, mica pigments, and resin. The artist sees her process as a sacred dialogue, a divine gift she feels compelled to honour through every brushstroke.

Despite her long pause from art, Viima’s technical ability seems to have evolved with her spirit. Her return to painting came with a determination to learn and grow, leading her to study at the Milan Art Institute’s Mastery Program in 2022–2023. Since then, she has joined the Finnish Artists Association and received international recognition, establishing herself as a powerful and evocative voice in contemporary mixed media.

WORKS

SYMBOLS OF LOVE, HUMANITY, AND INNER LIGHT

The work of Liisa Viima is deeply symbolic, often layered in both material and meaning. Each painting carries a strong emotional core, created with a palette that ranges from stark monochromes—white on white, black on black—to the thoughtful balance of warm and cold tones. Her canvases are textured and physically engaging, crafted through the careful layering of mediums including acrylics, oils, mica pigments, gypsum, and resin. This physicality mirrors the depth of emotion embedded within her themes.

Recurring motifs form the foundation of Viima’s visual language. Symbols such as human faces, hands, flowers, stars, doves, wounds, and horses appear frequently in her compositions. These elements speak to universal ideas: compassion, connection, hope, and spiritual resilience. Her works invite the viewer to reflect on the beauty of vulnerability and the quiet strength found in unity. Through texture and symbol, Viima gently challenges the viewer to pause, feel, and remember their own emotional truths.

Viima’s creative vision is further defined by her distinctive technique. Often beginning with cool tones receding into the background and warmer hues brought forward, she builds depth in both colour and meaning. Her use of stencils and fragments—tiles, glass, gypsum—adds a tactile quality, while the shimmer of mica pigments and the sleek finish of resin imbue her work with a sense of the sacred. Each painting becomes a tactile meditation, evoking both the fragility and strength of the human spirit.

ARTIST STATEMENT

FAITH, SYMBOLISM, AND THE JOURNEY BACK TO ART

I believe that creating art is a divine gift—something I carry within me as a calling rather than a choice. After nearly fifty years away from the canvas, painting returned to me with undeniable urgency. It wasn’t something I planned; it was something I had to do. I felt as if the skills I once left behind had somehow continued to evolve in silence. That mysterious sense of continuity is what led me back to my purpose, with a deepened understanding of who I am and what I’m meant to express.

Through my art, I explore ideas of humanity, love, forgiveness, and the enduring beauty found in emotional connection. Symbols such as hands, faces, wounds, stars, flowers, and animals like horses or pigeons reappear often in my work. These are not decorative elements—they are bridges. They help the viewer connect with their inner emotional world. If even one person feels their heart warm while viewing my painting, I know I have fulfilled my purpose.

I work primarily in layers, both literal and symbolic. Acrylics serve as the starting point, followed by oil paints and textured materials like gypsum, stencils, and resin. This layering is not just about technique—it reflects how life and healing unfold over time. I use a limited palette and intentional contrasts to draw the eye inward. Cold and warm tones shift focus, just like emotional moments in life. My work is a tactile prayer—each piece a dialogue between spirit, surface, and viewer.
