ABOUT MIDORI MCCABE

PERSONAL BACKGROUND AND CREATIVE APPROACH

Midori McCabe’s artistic roots were planted deep within the fertile cultural soil of Japan, where her mother, a renowned practitioner of Hiragana calligraphy, first exposed her to the delicate balance of brush and ink. Growing up, an encounter with an abstract Artist awoke an appreciation of color and form, which later became a foundation for her vibrant color palettes and dynamic textures.

McCabe’s artistic journey took a significant turn when she ventured abroad, immersing herself in London’s eclectic art scene. This period of exploration was marked by the establishment of “Della London,” a bespoke art jewelry brand that drew inspiration from diverse cultural backgrounds, including her interactions with a Kurdish friend.

Her global travels didn’t stop there; since 2009, she has also designed silk scarves for Art Foulard in Naples, Italy, further showcasing her ability to blend various artistic influences into her work.

The artist’s preferred mediums are as varied as her experiences. She utilizes acrylics for their brisk drying times and oil pastels for their rich texture, occasionally incorporating unconventional materials like coffee to introduce unique tactile qualities to her paintings.

McCabe’s studio, cluttered with an array of inspirational objects ranging from toys to books, mirrors the creative chaos that fuels her work, producing emotionally charged pieces that reflect both the luminosity and chromatic richness of her varied environments.

WORKS

THE DIVERSE CANVAS OF MIDORI MCCABE

Midori McCabe’s artwork is a testament to the freedom she cherishes in the creative process. Typically beginning without a predetermined plan, she engages with her canvas by experimenting with forms and colors in a relaxing initial phase, before shifting to more decisive and dynamic painting.

Her themes often revolve around the balance of freedom and discipline, a dichotomy that is not only central to her creative philosophy but also reflective of her bicultural experiences. Whether she’s incorporating materials found during her travels or experimenting with new techniques, McCabe’s work remains inherently explorative. The use of diverse media and techniques ensures that no two pieces are exactly alike, fostering a continuously evolving style that is both personal and universal. Each piece she creates is an amalgam of her life’s experiences, portrayed through a palette that communicates more profoundly than words, aiming to resonate emotionally with viewers who share a kindred spirit.

McCabe’s body of work includes significant international exhibitions and bespoke projects that highlight her global influence and local cultural insights. Notable displays at prestigious venues like Google Headquarters and various galleries in New York have brought her recognition across the art world.

ARTIST STATEMENT

ART AS AN EXTENSION OF SPIRIT

I believe that art is an extension of one’s spirit—a way to express what words cannot fully capture. Throughout my career, I have found that the most profound emotions and experiences are often those that are felt deeply rather than spoken. This belief drives my artistic approach, where I use colors and forms to delve into the core of my emotions, aiming to heal and understand my spirit through each stroke and hue.

The fluidity of my work, which takes inspiration from my Japanese heritage and my experiences across the globe, is a testament to the boundless possibilities of abstract art. Each painting begins as a playground of forms and colors on which ideas gradually take shape. This process is deeply therapeutic for me and, I hope, for those who encounter my work. The idea is not just to create art, but to spark a dialogue with viewers, communicating through the universal language of emotions and colors.

My journey is one of continuous experimentation, driven by a quest to challenge the conventional boundaries of materials and techniques. This relentless innovation is essential for my artistic expression, helping me to keep my work dynamic and evolving. It is through this exploratory spirit that I connect with audiences—sharing a piece of my world and perhaps touching the intangible threads of their own stories.
